When you select numbers, you are choosing a specific combination from all possible ways to pick numbers. For example, if you play a 6/70 lottery (pick 6 numbers from 1-70), there are 14,473,275 possible combinations.
Your coverage percentage shows what portion of all possible draws would match at least one of your selected combinations. If you choose only 6 numbers, your coverage is 1 in 14.4 million. If you create multiple combinations from variations of your favorite numbers, your coverage increases.
Real example:
If you pick the numbers 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42 and create all possible combinations by swapping just one number, you might generate 35 different combinations. That gives you roughly 0.00024% coverage - still tiny, but significantly better than a single ticket.
Common strategies:
- Birthdays and anniversaries: Numbers 1-31 are popular, so using higher numbers (32-70) may reduce ticket sharing if you win.
- Balanced mix: Mix of low (1-35) and high (36-70) numbers often matches historical draw patterns.
- Number patterns: Some players use arithmetic patterns, diagonals, or shapes on the lottery ticket grid.
